The baking soda and vinegar volcano is a classic science project. Baking soda and vinegar combine to produce a chemical reaction.
To build a baking soda powered volcano, follow these 3 steps.
Step 1 - Mix the following ingredients together: Baking Soda, Water, Dishwashing Detergent and Food Coloring.
1. Baking Soda - 1 Cup (not baking powder)
2. Vinegar - 2 Cups
3. Dishwashing Detergent - 1/4 Cup
4. Thick Contruction Paper -
5. Scotch Tape
6. Tall Glass or Empty Soda Bottle
7. Water - 1 Cup
8. Food Coloring (Optional, but worth it)
Step 2 - Create a cone shaped paper volcano with the glass centered below the hole inside.
Note: To create a cone shape, twist the paper into a cone then trim the top and bottom to the shape below. The top opening should be the same size as the glass or bottle being used. The tape is then used to attach the glass or bottle to the cone. See below.
Step 3 - Add the baking soda solution to the glass or bottle, then the vinegar and watch the volcano erupt...
Baking soda and vinegar combine to produce a chemical reaction. Carbon dioxide is produced, which you can color with food coloring to resemble lava. The dishwashing soap help the bubbles last longer.
